ROCKLAND, Maine — Two-and-a-half weeks after nomination papers became available, only two candidates have stepped forward for municipal positions.
Daniel Flynn of Maverick Street took out papers July 23 from the city clerk’s office for a seat on the City Council.
There are two of the five City Council seats up for a vote in November — those held by Nate Davis and Kaitlin Callahan. Davis said he will not seek another term. Callahan has not announced her plan.
There is one seat up for election to represent Rockland on Regional School Unit 13’s 10-member board. Kali Ausplund, who is completing her first three-year term, said Wednesday that she would not seek reelection.
Irene Flynn of Maverick Street has taken out papers for the seat.
Flynn works for Evergreen Home Performance as a Rockland-based energy adviser. She spoke at the RSU 13 board’s Aug. 5 meeting and voiced concern about exposing young children (prekindergarten and kindergarten) to digital technology. She noted the surgeon general has recommended waiting as late as possible to introduce children to digital technology.
She said schools in Maine are removing cellphone use for students during the school day and should expand its policy on all digital technology for the youngest children.
Irene and Daniel Flynn are husband and wife.
There is also one port district seat up for election. That seat is held by Noah Barnes. The seat is for five years.
Papers could begin being taken out July 21.
Nomination papers must be turned in to the city clerk’s office by Sept. 3 to get on the Nov. 3 ballot. City Council and school board candidates need to collect the signatures of at least 100 registered Rockland voters to qualify for the ballot.
