A Belgrade man allegedly fired a rifle near a summer camp Friday night after complaining about a tractor.
Nathan R. Hewett, 36, has been charged with reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon and terrorizing, all felonies, according to J. Chris Read, the chief deputy of the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office.
Hewett and another man, whose identity wasn’t made public, approached Camp Modin about 7:04 p.m. from Hewett’s neighboring property on Smithfield Road. They were met by security and complained about “something to do with a tractor,” Read said Monday morning.
Security called 911 after the confrontation, and during that call, a dispatcher heard gunshots.
The camp, where there were several staffers and hundreds of kids, was put into lockdown after deputies arrived, and one deputy counted Hewett firing about 20 shots with a .22-caliber semi-automatic rifle in various directions, including potentially toward a basketball court at the camp, according to Read.
Hewett, who appeared intoxicated, was arrested without incident at his home.
He was taken to the Kennebec County Jail in Augusta, where he was being held without bail.
No one was hurt in the shooting.
