Four councilors will run the Brewer City Council until November when a recently vacated seat will be on the ballot.
Bill Kimball, Brewer’s former deputy mayor, resigned from his seat July 29. Kimball told the Bangor Daily News that he wasn’t able to commit the amount of time he wanted to the position and decided to step down.
Brewer City Councilors Dani O’Halloran, Michele Daniels, Soubanh Phanthay and Mayor Jenn Morin voted to accept Kimball’s resignation and put the remainder of his term on the November ballot during the council’s Tuesday meeting.
The seat, which was not up for re-election until November 2027, is now up for grabs as a one-year-term.
The council did not vote for a new deputy mayor Tuesday, and it’s unclear if one will be selected before the November election. Brewer’s charter calls for a mayor and deputy mayor to be chosen at an annual meeting after the election, but councilors can call for the position to be filled before then if they choose to.
Kimball was a valued member of the council and brought a leveled approach to the city’s issues and proposals, Morin and O’Halloran said.
“I’m grateful for the time, the perspective and the thoughtful approach that he brought to the council, and genuinely wish him and his family and his business continued success,” Morin said.
