We’ve got a stretch of cool weather ahead of us, at least compared to what we’ve been through over the past month. Highs will peak in the 70s for much of the state into early next week.
Today could get wet with showers and even some thunderstorms during the afternoon.
Given the recent spate of shark sightings off the coast, the cooler weather couldn’t have arrived at a better time.
Wells closed its beaches Wednesday after a shark was spotted about 500 yards off a popular swimming area. Numerous sharks have been sighted in the past week as far up the coast as Winter Harbor, though far more commonly seen off southern Maine, where one pulled a lifeguard underwater when it grabbed his torpedo buoy.
But many Mainers aren’t fazed by the presence of sharks, whose home is the ocean after all. As one beachgoer put it: “It’s like going into the woods and not expecting to see a bear.”
Troy Jackson punched a man and pushed his partner in 1988, police report says
When U.S. Senate candidate Troy Jackson was 19, he broke down a door and punched a man at a Fort Kent home, according to a 1988 police report obtained exclusively by the Bangor Daily News. The victim claimed Jackson told him to “stay away from Lana Pelletier or else.”
The report also included a statement from Pelletier, Jackson’s longtime partner, that he “pushed her around.” Pelletier has no memory of making the statement to police and denied that Jackson pushed her. Jackson, 58, who has two adult sons with Pelletier, said he has never been violent with her, but he acknowledged the rest.
“Nearly [40] years ago, when I was 19 years old, I got into a fight with another man. I took responsibility for it then, and I take responsibility for it now,” he said in a statement. “But let me be clear: I have never been violent with my partner Lana, or any other woman. This happened nearly four decades ago, and I assure Mainers this incident in no way reflects the man I am today or the life I’ve led in the years since.”
