DOVER-FOXCROFT, Maine — A Guilford man is charged with murder and assault after he allegedly fatally injured a man and left a woman in critical condition.

Ryan Carleton, 49, of Guilford, was arrested Sunday for assault after Piscataquis County sheriff’s deputies found two seriously injured people at 26 Pine St. in Guilford.

Officers later identified the people as Brent Doore, 62, and Stephanie Doore, 59. Both were taken to a hospital, where Brent Doore died and Stephanie Doore remains in critical condition, Maine State Police said Monday.

Stephanie Doore is a social worker in the Guilford-based SAD 4

Carleton made his first appearance in Piscataquis County Superior Court on Tuesday.

Carleton appeared in the courtroom wearing an orange jumpsuit. Justice Harold L. Stewart II informed him of the charges and his rights.

Carleton faces two counts: the intentional or knowing murder of Brent Doore, and elevated aggravated assault with a dangerous weapon, which caused serious injury to Stephanie Doore.

He did not enter a plea and is being held at the Piscataquis County Jail without bail.

If he is convicted, Carleton could face up to life in prison for murder, and up to 30 years in prison for the Class A assault charge, Stewart said.

The case will go next to a grand jury to determine probable cause. If found, an indictment will be issued and a court date will be scheduled.

Carleton will be held without bail until a request for a Harnish hearing has been made. A status conference is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Sept. 28.

In 2021, Carleton had been sentenced to two years in prison for animal cruelty, assault on a corrections officer and a bail violation. He was convicted of killing his father’s kitten with a frying pan and attacking an officer at the Piscataquis County Jail along with several bail violations.
