Police caught up to a Florida driver on Wednesday evening after reportedly receiving more than a dozen 911 calls about a truck blowing through a closed gate at a weigh station, crossing medians, going in circles and otherwise driving erratically.
The calls started coming in at about 5:30 p.m. Callers reported a box truck driving erratically on I-95 southbound in Old Town, including the trip through the weigh station, after which the driver continued south on the highway, Maine State Police said in a news release.
Bangor and Orono police were called in to help find the truck, which reportedly exited the interstate at Hogan Road in Bangor then got back on headed north, crossed the median and began traveling the wrong way in the southbound lanes, police said.
The truck was later reported to be driving in circles in the parking lot of Lowe’s in Bangor.
Police found the truck in the parking lot of BJ’s Wholesale Club and said they took the driver, Julio Matos, 36, of Orange City, Florida, into custody without incident.
Matos was taken to the Penobscot County Jail and faces charges of criminal OUI, driving to endanger, and failure to notify of a motor vehicle accident. More charges may be filed, police said.
No injuries were reported.
