FARMINGTON — High Peaks Alliance is pleased to welcome Dr. Michael DeCarolis to its Board of Directors. A local licensed emergency medicine physician based in Farmington, Dr. DeCarolis brings a deep commitment to public service, wilderness medicine, environmental education and responsible backcountry access to the organization’s leadership.
Dr. DeCarolis has specialized training in wilderness medicine through Yale University and holds advanced credentials in mountain medicine and the Academy of Wilderness Medicine. His professional interests include education, environmental toxicology and glaciated alpine and mountaineering-based search and rescue, reflecting a career dedicated to safety, preparedness and the outdoor environments that define Maine’s High Peaks region.
“Dr. DeCarolis brings a unique combination of medical expertise, outdoor experience, and a genuine respect for the landscapes and communities we serve,” Amanda Laliberte, director of engagement at High Peaks Alliance, said. “His perspective will strengthen our work to ensure that the High Peaks remain accessible, welcoming and well cared for for residents and visitors alike”.
An avid outdoorsman, Dr. DeCarolis has completed the Appalachian Trail and has climbed the 100 highest mountains in New England. He also enjoys kayaking, fishing, hunting, foraging and wildlife and landscape photography, all of which reflect a lifelong connection to the natural world and to the traditions of outdoor recreation in western Maine.
“Interaction with the natural world is a core foundation of the human experience,” Dr. DeCarolis said. “It is paramount that we ensure easy and barrier-free access to those in our local community and those who visit it.”
High Peaks Alliance works to keep the Maine High Peaks wild and open to traditional use through conservation, access, and collaboration. The organization brings together local hunters, hikers, birders, loggers, fishermen, snowmobile and ATV riders, Maine Guides, cross-country skiers, mountain bikers and others who share a commitment to public access and stewardship.
