Suspects remain at large Tuesday after shooting at a Sanford police officer during the early morning hours.
The officer attempted to stop a vehicle near Shaw and Lebanon streets about 1:12 a.m., when an occupant in the vehicle fired a gun at the officer, according to the Sanford Police Department.
The vehicle fled and was later found abandoned.
The officer wasn’t injured.
Despite a large manhunt with assistance from four police departments, a regional tactical force, the York County Sheriff’s Office and the Maine Forest Service, the suspects remained at large early Tuesday afternoon.
Police have conducted door-to-door checks, canvassed several streets and used police dogs. The Sanford police force remains “committed” to identifying those responsible and taking them into custody.
“We also want to be clear about the nature of this incident: this was an act of violence directed at a police officer who was carrying out their duty and attempting to enforce the law,” the department said.
Police urged residents who live in the area to remain vigilant and to not approach any suspicious strangers.
Anyone who spots suspicious activity should immediately find a safe place and call 911, because the suspects may still be armed.
