Bangor’s Tom Caron birdied the 18th hole to force a playoff and sunk a birdie putt on the first playoff hole to claim his second straight Maine Senior Amateur Golf Tournament championship at the Bangor Municipal Golf Course on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The 59-year-old Caron posted a two-under-par 70-70-140 over the two days on his home course to match Scott Dewitt of the Biddeford-Saco Country Club’s 71-69-140.
Dewitt had finished his round a little earlier. They returned to the 18th hole for the playoff.
Caron shot three-under par over his final six holes while Dewitt shot even par, and he made up a two-shot deficit on the final two holes.
Caron parred the par-four 17th hole before posting his birdie on the par-five 18th while Dewitt bogeyed the 17th hole and parred the 18th.
The winner’s final round got off to a shaky start with a double-bogey six on the first hole and a bogey four on the third hole.
But he fought back to shoot four-under par the rest of the way.
They were the only two golfers who finished under par in the 108-player field.
Keith Patterson, the 2022 and ’23 Senior Amateur titlist, finished third with an even-par 71-71-142, 2021 winner Michael O’Brien was fourth with a one-over 69-74-143.
Patterson and O’Brien also play out of the Biddeford-Saco Country Club.
Wyman Tapley (74-70-144) from the Kebo Valley Golf Club in Bar Harbor and Roland Myers (71-73-144) from the Martindale Country Club in Auburn tied for fifth.
Rounding out the top 10 were Roger Williams (75-70-145) from the Augusta Country Club, Vance Gray (72-73-145) from Orono’s Penobscot Valley Country Club (72-73-145), Patrick LaRoche (70-75-145) from the Dutch Elm Golf Club in Arundel and Chris Brook (74-72-146) from the PVCC.
Caron won his first Senior Amateur title a year ago at the Riverside Municipal Golf Course in Portland.
