A slash pile fire in a gravel pit east of Adams Road in Connor Township in Aroostook County burned for approximately four hours Friday night before crews contained it, according to Caribou Fire & Ambulance.
The Maine Forest Service reported smoke in the area at approximately 9:15 p.m., and multiple calls to 911 reporting the fire followed.
The exact location of the fire was difficult to determine with flames and smoke visible from Route 1 in Connor.
Crews eventually located the fire, an approximately quarter-acre slash pile of logging debris in a gravel pit off Beaulieu Road.
Firefighters battled heavy smoke and wind while applying water and soaking the surrounding area to prevent the fire from spreading into nearby forest.
A bulldozer and operator provided by the property owner also helped contain the blaze.
After about four hours and 6,500 gallons of water, crews knocked down the fire, stopping it from spreading to the surrounding forest.
The cause remains under investigation by the Maine Forest Service.
Smoke and smoldering material are expected to remain visible in the area for several days.
