Three people were hurt Saturday night in a wrong-way crash on I-295 in Portland.
According to Maine State Police spokesperson Shannon Moss, calls about a wrong-way driver on the highway began coming in to dispatchers at about 7:15 p.m., followed shortly by calls of a head-on crash near Tukey’s Bridge, which is near exit 8 in Portland.
Police say a 2020 Subaru Outback driven by 88-year-old Ronald Ferguson of Nelson, New Hampshire mistakenly entered the southbound lanes of I-295, going in the wrong direction.
Shortly after, the Subaru collided with a 2023 Mitsubishi Eclipse that was traveling south.
Ferguson, a female passenger and the woman driving the Mitsubishi Eclipse were all transported to Maine Medical Center in Portland with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Two of the four lanes of I-295 were shut down for just over two hours.
