In 2010, my last year on the Bangor City Council, I sponsored an amendment to the city charter to reduce the number of signatures on council nomination papers from 150 to 100. I got it passed and the voters approved it in the next election. My motive was to bring the council process into line with the school board’s and also to make it a little easier for citizens to qualify for the ballot.

Little did I dream that there would one day be 12 candidates qualifying! Observing this and the present council’s record, I now quote two famous actors. Jimmy Durante: “Everybody wants to get into the act!” And Tom Hanks as Forrest Gump: “Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get!” Ain’t that the truth?
