The Presque Isle City Council will vote on whether five buildings in its city are dangerous, marking a significant expansion of the city’s safety enforcement.
The council Wednesday scheduled five dangerous building hearings for its October and November meetings, matching the total number of hearings it has held in the past year.
The dangerous building designation is an effective condemnation that would order property owners to abate the problems within 30 days. If conditions don’t improve, the city will fine the owner $100 per day and City Manager Sonja Eyler can authorize its demolition.
The properties to be considered are 5 Archer St., 49 Lombard St., 63 Dupont Drive, 107 Dyer St., 31 Caron St. and 499 Caribou Road.
The council last designated a property as dangerous in July, and before that condemned four others in October of 2025.
Four of the properties up for condemnation — 5 Archer St., 63 Dupont Drive, 107 Dyer St., 31 Caron St. and 499 Caribou Road — will have their hearings in the council’s Oct. 7 meeting. The council will review the house at 49 Lombard St. on Nov. 4 at the request of councilor Debra Plummer, who said she will miss the October meeting but wants to be in attendance when that particular building is considered.
Presque Isle has made greater efforts over the past year to address dangerous properties. An ordinance aiming to prevent buildings from sitting vacant was called “government overreach” by landlords before the council approved a paired down version earlier this year.
