A man allegedly stole a large outdoor umbrella from a downtown Bangor business on Monday morning.

Christopher Bryden, 44, has been charged with theft by unauthorized taking and refusal to submit to arrest or detention, according to Katy England, a spokesperson for the Bangor Police Department.

The owner of Bangin’ Whoopie reported the theft about 8:05 a.m., and after reviewing security footage, police identified Bryden as a suspect.

When a police officer later found him, Bryden allegedly fled and was found a short time later hiding in some bushes.

Bryden was taken to the Penobscot County Jail, where he remained Wednesday morning, according to the jail’s website.

The umbrella was returned, according to Bangin’ Whoopie.
