BANGOR — Penquis will celebrate the grand opening of its new Bright Beginnings Child Development Center at 31 Hillside Ave. from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 23, marking the completion of a transformational project that will serve children and families in the Bangor region for generations to come.

The project represents a remarkable partnership between federal investment and local philanthropy. Bangor was one of only three Head Start centers in the nation selected to receive federal funding for a new facility. To bring the project to completion, Penquis was required to raise nearly $1 million in matching funds, a goal made possible through the extraordinary support of local businesses, foundations, organizations and individual donors throughout the community.

The new center provides a modern, purpose-built environment designed to support early childhood development, school readiness and family well-being. The facility reflects years of planning, collaboration, and community commitment to ensuring that local children have access to high-quality early learning opportunities.

“This building demonstrates what can happen when a community comes together around children and families,” Kara Hay, president and CEO of Penquis, said. “The generosity and belief shown by so many individuals, businesses, foundations, and partners made this project possible. Bright Beginnings will have an impact not only on the children who learn here today, but on generations of families to come.”

The grand opening celebration will recognize the many partners who contributed to the project’s success and will feature remarks from Penquis leadership, community supporters, elected officials, Head Start representatives and members of the Bright Beginnings Capital Campaign Committee. A parent whose family has been directly impacted by Head Start services will also share how access to quality early childhood education and care has made a meaningful difference in their lives.

Guests will have the opportunity to tour portions of the new facility and learn more about the programs and services offered at Bright Beginnings. Refreshments prepared by Penquis nutrition staff will showcase the healthy meals and snacks that support children’s growth and development every day.

Penquis is a nonprofit organization incorporated in 1967 to assist individuals and families in improving their financial stability. Through its programs and subsidiaries, Penquis affects all of Maine’s sixteen counties but primarily serves individuals in Penobscot, Piscataquis and Knox counties. Approximately 5,000 people are served on any given day and more than 30,000 each year.
