Portland police officers shot a man who was allegedly attacking another man Monday night.
Officers Joseph Lowe and David Moore went to a Colonial Road residence about 8:16 p.m. after getting a call about a disturbance there, according to Brad Nadeau, a spokesperson for the Portland Police Department.
A tenant met the officers and escorted them inside, but then the tenant, who was ahead of Lowe and Moore, ran back toward them, screaming, Nadeau said Tuesday morning.
Inside Lowe and Moore found 41-year-old Brian Oliver of Portland allegedly assaulting 69-year-old Mark Tschamler, according to Nadeau.
Oliver allegedly didn’t obey commands to drop his weapon, and the officers shot him.
Oliver was taken to Maine Medical Center.
Tschamler died at the scene.
Nadeau said that Oliver will be charged with murder.
Lowe and Moore have been placed on administrative leave, as is standard procedure. The Maine attorney general’s office is investigating, as is standard procedure whenever law enforcement officers use deadly force in the state.
It’s the second police shooting in the Forest City in the past month. On Aug. 27, Portland police shot and killed 37-year-old Jacob Hastings at the Casco Bay Lines ferry terminal on Commercial Street after a string of armed carjackings.
