As a teacher, in the first month of the school year, I fear for the health and safety of our children.
Last week, the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention reported a case of measles in our state. Measles is horribly contagious and can have permanent, debilitating effects on those who get sick. Measles is entirely preventable. Other childhood illnesses are also preventable with regularly scheduled vaccinations. Protecting our children also protects our vulnerable family members and friends.
The leaders of the federal Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) continue to falsely claim vaccines cause autism and are unsafe. What is unsafe is dangerous misinformation and those who allow it to be spread.
Sen. Susan Collins voted to confirm Robert F. Kennedy to head HHS despite knowing his record against proven science. So, I believe a vote for Collins is a vote against healthy and safe children.
