A Bangor infant died March 7 from asphyxiation, a state official said Tuesday.
The 7-month-old died from probable positional asphyxiation while in a suboptimal sleeping environment, said Lindsey Chasteen, spokesperson for the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner on Tuesday.
The baby’s manner of death was accidental, Chasteen said. Manner of death is classified in one of five categories: natural, accident, suicide, homicide or undetermined.
The Bangor Daily News first reported the infant’s death March 10. Bangor police said there was no threat to the public at the time. Police are investigating and there are no updates available, spokesperson Katy England said Tuesday.
State law requires autopsies for children younger than 3 if there were no medical professionals present at the time of the child’s death.
