A Georgia man has been arrested in the spring crash that left a star Maine swimmer dead.

Burton Brinkman, 22, of Marietta has been charged with death by vehicle and serious injury by vehicle, both felonies, according to WCB-TV in Atlanta.

Brinkman was allegedly under the influence while driving a BMW M3 north on Queens Road West in Charlotte, North Carolina, about 2:15 a.m. on May 10 when the sedan went off the road and hit a tree, according to WCB-TV and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

That crash killed 22-year-old Keegan McKenney and injured Brinkman’s other passengers, who firefighters had to free from the wreckage, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said at the time.

McKenney was a standout swimmer at Cape Elizabeth High School, where he graduated in 2022. That year he helped Cape Elizabeth win its first state title since 2015 and beat a school record set back in 1983.

He was attending Queens College in Charlotte, where McKenney continued to swim competitively.

The crash remains under investigation.
