The struggling University of Maine’s football team, which has one of the worst offenses among the 124 schools in the Football Championship Subdivision, has fired offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Mikahael Waters according to WFVX Fox 22/WVII ABC 7 sports director Jack Webb.
He is being replaced by running backs coach Sean Green, the former state championship-winning head coach at Portland and Cape Elizabeth High Schools.
He has also been the quarterbacks coach and involved in play-calling at the University of New England in Biddeford.
Head coach Jordan Stevens’ Black Bears are mired in a five-game losing streak and are 1-5 overall, 1-2 in the Coastal Athletic Conference.
Waters was in his eighth season on the UMaine staff, joining the staff in July of 2019 as the tight ends coach.
He spent four years in that capacity before moving on to coach the wide receivers.
He was elevated to the position of assistant special teams coordinator and pro liaison in the summer of 2022.
He became the special teams coordinator a year later and, in March of 2024, he was named the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.
In 2025, the Black Bears averaged 54 rushing yards per game more than in 2024 and they averaged 29.5 points per game in the CAA, the most by a UMaine offense in 10 years.
This season has been an offensive nightmare even though the Black Bears returned four starters in the interior offensive line, a tight end and running backs Rashawn Marshall, a Phil Steele Freshman All-American in 2025, and Nick Laughlin.
However, UMaine does have two inexperienced quarterbacks in Eddie Buehler and Caden Drezek and both have been inconsistent while also being victimized by several drops by their receivers and the inability to establish a consistent running game.
Buehler has seen the vast majority of playing time, starting the first five games before the two split Saturday’s game, a 24-16 loss to CAA newcomer Sacred Heart (Connecticut).
The Black Bears are currently 109th or worse in six offensive categories: points per game (14.5, 118th), total yards per game (270.2, 115th), passing completion percentage (52%, 113th), rushing yards per game (96, 110th), fourth down conversion rate (26.7%, 109th) and passing yards per completion (10.25, 109th).
UMaine is also ranked 97th in time of possession (28 minutes per game), 93rd in passing yards per contest (174.2), 90th in third down conversions (33%) and tied for 85th in first downs with 89.
UMaine has next weekend off and will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 17 when it hosts CAA rival Bryant (RI) at 1 p.m. at Morse Field in Alfond Stadium.
