A Standish man died Monday afternoon when the excavator he was operating overturned.

John Woodman, 61, was operating the excavator at a job site off Bull Run Road in Gray, where Shaw Brothers and Unitil were working on a petroleum pipeline, according to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.

Woodman, who was a Shaw Brothers employee, was on a steep grade about 2:09 p.m. when the excavator overturned, leaving him with fatal injuries, the sheriff’s office said Tuesday afternoon.

His death remains under investigation by the sheriff’s office, the Maine medical examiner’s office and the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
