PEMBROKE — On Sunday, Oct. 11 at 1 p.m., the Pembroke Historical Society Lyceum’s “MaineSong” series will present historic songs of the Maine potato and oyster harvests.

Pembroke & Perry Schools music teacher Kris Paprocki will present “When the Taters Are All Dug” from Aroostook County, home of the Maine Potato, and the traditional Irish song “In the Garden Where the Praties Grow” which found its way throughout Maine and other parts of North America. With the revival of Maine’s oystering industry, and now that as the old folk saying has it “Oysters R in Season,” Stephen Sanfilippo, historian of songs of the maritime trades, will present “The Dredging Song” with his own musical setting. This obscure Scottish song was found in a newspaper clipping tucked into a book, now in the Pembroke Historical Society collection, that was once owned by William O. Hersey, Pembroke educator, diarist and historian.

The Pembroke Historical Society’s “MaineSong” Lyceum gatherings include performance, audience participation and discussions that lead from the local to the far corners of the world. The Oct. 11gathering is at the Pembroke Historical Society Museum. Admission is by donation. Family friendly and everyone is invited.

This is an all-volunteer event at a registered not-for-profit organization. The museum is located at the intersections of Front Street, Old County Road and Shore Road. For additional information, please write to lyceum@pembrokemainehistoricalsociety.org or phone at 207-726-4747.
