AUGUSTA — The Wabanaki Alliance will host an Indigenous Peoples’ Day celebration on Monday, Oct. 12 in Capitol Park at 33 Union St. in Augusta.
The opening ceremony begins at 10 a.m. and will be led by Maulian Bryant, executive director of the Wabanaki Alliance. The event will feature drumming, dancing and screenings of the films “We are the Warriors” and “Bounty”, followed by guided reflection and discussion. The event will close at 2 p.m. with a round dance.
“Rooted in our homelands now called Maine, the strength of our community reaches far and wide,” Bryant said. “As a new dawn rises, we gather to honor our enduring presence as Wabanaki people – standing side by side with our friends, partners and allies in celebration.”
Event schedule:
10 a.m. – Opening ceremony & prayer: Traditional invocation and introductory greetings by Maulian Bryant, establishing the cultural and historical framework for the day
10:15 a.m. – Cultural Grounds & Demonstration Tents open: Live drumming and dancing cycles begin on the main grounds; the basketmaking, beading and policy info tables open to the public
11 a.m. – Morning Film Screening: Attendees gather in the main pavilion for a showing of “We Are the Warriors”
1:30 p.m. – Afternoon feature event: A screening of “Bounty”
2 p.m. – Closing ceremony and Round Dance
