ROCKLAND, Maine — The Coast Guard rescued two lobstermen Monday night after their vessel took on water about 7 miles offshore from St. George, where it struck some rocks.
The 43-foot vessel had two people aboard at the time of the grounding. They were returning to port to offload their catch. Both mariners made it safely onto the island.
At approximately 7:15 p.m. Monday, Coast Guard Sector Northern New England received a mayday call over VHF radio from the lobster boat Gulf Traveler, reporting that the vessel had run hard aground on the southern portion of Metinic Green Island.
A Coast Guard Station Rockland response boat crew and a Coast Guard helicopter crew were dispatched to assist. The Station Rockland crew arrived on scene but was unable to remove the mariners safely from the island.
A Coast Guard helicopter crew successfully hoisted both mariners from the island and transported them to Knox County Regional Airport in Owls Head, where emergency medical services personnel were waiting to provide further evaluation.
No injuries were reported.
The cause of the grounding remains under investigation by the Coast Guard.
The Coast Guard’s Sikorsky MH-60 Jayhawk medium-range recovery helicopter helicopter was launched from Air Station Cape Cod.
