Democrat Hannah Pingree, Republican Bobby Charles and independent Rick Bennett meet at 8 p.m. Wednesday in the fourth and final debate of their race, hosted by WMTW.
Pingree, a former Maine House speaker and top adviser to outgoing Gov. Janet Mills, is the clear favorite three weeks from Election Day. Decision Desk HQ, the Bangor Daily News’ election results partner, gives her an 85% chance of winning. She has led every public poll since the June primary.
Charles, a former federal government official, won the Republican primary promising to cut $4 billion from the state budget and phase out the income tax. He has spent the general election softening his rhetoric on President Donald Trump, while Bennett, a state senator and former Maine Republican Party chair, has detailed policy plans but polls in the single digits.
The winner inherits a $1 billion budget gap from Mills. Tonight is the last time the three share a stage before the Nov. 3 election.
