An 84-year old Gorham man suffered serious burns Sunday afternoon when his clothing caught fire when he was burning paper on a stove.

The Gorham Fire Department was called to the incident on Barstow Road around 3 p.m., according to the Maine Department of Public Safety. First responders found the man with extensive burns on multiple areas of his body and then transported him to Maine Medical Center for treatment.

Investigators with the Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office have classified the incident as accidental, the department said in a release.

Officials with the fire marshal’s office stressed that people should exercise caution when burning paper or other items and to keep combustible items and clothing away from open flames or other heat sources.
