A retaining wall along Kenduskeag Stream in downtown Bangor will be rebuilt.
The City Council on Wednesday authorized the city manager to enter into a contract with Sangerville-based Gordon Contracting Inc. to rebuild the south-facing retaining wall at Hamlin Park.
A site evaluation report earlier this year found that multiple granite blocks have been dislodged from the lower portion of the wall between Central and Hammond streets and that plant growth is widening gaps between the stones. Grout used to protect the steel and rebar pins has largely washed away.
All those factors have come together to make the retaining wall, built nearly a century ago, more vulnerable to tides.

Gordon Contracting was one of three companies to bid for the project and submitted the lowest bid at $3.8 million.
The project will replace about 115 feet of wall with an average height of 26 feet.
The timeline for the project wasn’t immediately available. On Thursday, Gordon Contracting said in a social media post that it will strive to reduce the length of construction to minimize impact on nearby businesses and residents.
It’s the second retaining wall along Kenduskeag Stream to require repair in recent years. The stretch of retaining wall west of Franklin Street was replaced after segments of the concrete wall fell into the stream.
