The U.S. Economic Development Administration approved Eastern Maine Development Corporation ‘s Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy, confirming its EDA funding eligibility and reinforcing its designation as an Economic Development District through March 31, 2031.
Through a series of meetings involving 75 participants and several keynote speakers, the CEDS process established a strategic roadmap for regional economic development focused on building local capacity, strengthening economic resilience and advancing long-term prosperity across the region. The EMDC plan was developed in coordination with Maine’s 10-Year Economic Development Strategy to align regional priorities with statewide economic goals and the priorities of the current federal administration.
“Maine has always been nimble in demonstrating resilience and determination in navigating all kinds of economic challenges ranging from mill closures to the COVID-19 pandemic,” EMDC President & CEO Lee Umphrey said. “We are adept at embracing new opportunities made possible by a strong education and workforce development system that prepares communities and businesses for the future. This report reflects Maine’s resilience in attracting new industries and protecting our natural resources while recruiting, training, and retaining the workforce needed for economic growth and prosperity.”
Umphrey added, “Key community stakeholders and several EMDC staff members, especially our colleague Jaida Bolstridge, compliance & development analyst, guided the creation of a report that will serve as a catalyst for new ideas and endeavors.”
