A driver who allegedly injured a road worker in a construction zone on Interstate 95 in Pittsfield earlier this month has been identified and charged, Maine State Police said Wednesday.
Jonathan McDonald, 22, of Laconia, New Hampshire, has been issued a summons with charges in three categories: accidents involving death or personal injury, driving to endanger, and accident reports.
The incident happened on the morning of Oct. 14 in a single-lane construction zone in Pittsfield.
A silver pickup truck hauling a black dump trailer hit a concrete Jersey barrier. The truck then hit an orange construction barrel on the right side of the road that was knocked into 56-year-old Richard Smart of Westfield, who was working for Northeast Construction unloading Jersey barriers.
Smart was taken to Northern Light Sebasticook Valley Hospital with serious injuries and later released.
The male driver of the pickup, later identified as McDonald, continued north without stopping, according to police, who said witnesses reported seeing him turn around inside the truck as the crash occurred then speed away.
