Maine State Police are seeking the public’s help identifying a driver who hit several barriers in a construction zone on Wednesday morning, sending a road worker to the hospital.

The hit-and-run crash in a single-lane construction zone in Pittsfield was reported at about 8:17 a.m., according to state police.

A silver pickup truck hauling a black dump trailer hit a concrete Jersey barrier and an orange construction barrel on the right side of the road. The barrel was knocked into 56-year-old Richard Smart of Westfield, who was working for Northeast Construction unloading Jersey barriers, police said.

The male driver of the pickup continued north without stopping, according to police, who said witnesses reported seeing him turn around inside the truck as the crash occurred then speed away.

Smart was taken by ambulance to Northern Light Sebasticook Valley Hospital in Pittsfield with serious injuries that were not considered life-threatening, police said.

Maine State Police are asking anyone who witnessed the crash or has information about the truck or driver to call the Bangor Regional Communications Center at 207-973-3700, ext. 9, and ask for Trooper Klayton Peckham.
