Old Town City Manager Bill Mayo has submitted his 90-day notice and will stay in the role until Jan. 7.

City Council President Christian Pushor announced Mayo’s retirement during a council meeting on Monday.

“We hate to see you go, sir,” Pushor said. Councilors then joked that they may try to change his mind.

Mayo did not say why he is retiring, or make any comment about it, during the meeting.

For more than 15 years, Mayo has been the Old Town city manager. In that time, Mayo has navigated the city through two closures of the Old Town mill and a fire that changed the downtown landscape. He also brought in millions of dollars in grants.

Old Town will advertise the job opening with the Maine Municipal Association to find a candidate, Pushor said. Candidates will be interviewed by the City Council, Pushor said.
