Husson will offer free tuition to Aroostook County students starting next fall.
It’s the third county to be covered by such a scholarship program at the Bangor-based university, Husson announced Friday morning. Students from Penobscot and Piscataquis counties already have had the opportunity to attend Husson without worrying about paying for classes.
The scholarship is made possible by Bruce and Cynthia Grainger, who graduated from Husson in 1990. The couple met there in 1988 and have been married for more than three decades.
“We are thrilled to expand the Opportunity Scholarship program to a third Maine county thanks to the generosity of Husson University Board of Trustees Vice Chair Bruce Grainger and his wife Cynthia Grainger. Both are proud Husson graduates who know the value of a Husson education,” President Lynne Coy-Ogan said in a statement.
Qualified students must have at least a 3.0 high school GPA, an adjusted gross family income of less than $80,000 and live in Aroostook County, according to Husson. The scholarship will be available to students applying to begin classes in the fall of 2027.
Students must attend Husson full time and enroll in a four-year degree at the Bangor campus.
