A person’s body has been recovered after a fire tore through a Palermo building Monday night, injuring one other man.

The fire broke out about 11:25 p.m. at the Leeman Arm Road home, according to Shannon Moss, a spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

When firefighters arrived, they found the home engulfed in flames and a severely burned man in the road near the home, Moss said Tuesday morning.

He told firefighters that another person was still inside the home. The man was taken to MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta before being flown to Maine Medical Center in Portland, where he remains in critical condition, according to Moss.

The second victim of the fire was located this morning, Moss said mid-afternoon Tuesday. The person’s body has been transported to the Maine medical examiner’s office to determine their identity and confirm cause of death.

At this time, investigators believe the blaze was set off by an explosion inside the home. The home had a propane gas supply for heat and appliances, according to officials.

The blaze remains under investigation.
