Seven players who led their respective teams to berths in Tuesday’s regional softball and baseball championship games highlight the list of finalists for the Miss Maine Softball and Mr. Maine Baseball awards that go to the state’s top senior player.
The lists were recently announced by the Maine High School Baseball and Softball Coaches’ Associations.
There are 13 finalists for Miss Maine Softball and nine for Mr. Maine Baseball.
The winners will be announced between the Classes C-D and A-B Senior All-Star games at St. Joseph’s College in Standish on June 23 (boys) and June 24 (girls). The C-D boys all-star game will start at 3:30 p.m. with the A-B game slated at 6:30 p.m. and the softball games the next day will begin at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m., respectively.
Penobscot Valley High of Howland pitcher Lauren Veino piloted her Howlers to a berth in the Class D North championship game against Katahdin of Stacyville; Old Town shortstop Natalie Fournier sparked the Coyotes to a spot in the B North final against Gardiner; outfielder Hailey Lamontagne and her Cheverus team from Portland met Bonny Eagle of Buxton in the A South title game; shortstop Nikole Turnbull of Dirigo High in Dixfield faced Monmouth Academy in the C South final; and shortstop Chloe Bennett from Buckfield took the field against North Yarmouth Academy in the D South championship contest.
The other eight finalists are Oxford Hills of South Paris pitcher-third baseman Kyeria Morse, York first baseman Maddie Fitzgerald, Wells shortstop-outfielder Payton Fazzina, Lawrence High of Fairfield catcher Ashley Shores, Old Orchard Beach pitcher Hannah Webber, Windham shortstop-pitcher Addison Caiazzo, Narraguagus of Harrington pitcher Natalie Stanwood and Orono High pitcher Jillian Severance.
A pair of pitcher-shortstops who sparked their teams to regional title game appearances in baseball are among the Mr. Baseball finalists.
Parker Morin from Cony High in Augusta and his Ram teammates faced Hermon in the B North final, and Alex Allain from Fryeburg Academy took the field against Greely of Cumberland Center in the B South final.
The other finalists are South Portland pitcher-first baseman-outfielder Hudson Iacuessa, Old Orchard Beach pitcher-shortstop Trot Moody, Messalonskee of Oakland pitcher-first baseman Denny Martin, Mount Desert Island shortstop-pitcher Colin Sullivan, Ellsworth pitcher-first baseman Jackson Barry, Dexter-Piscataquis Community High of Guilford pitcher-shortstop Brady Gaw and Katahdin of Stacyville pitcher-shortstop Calvin Richardson.
