An 77-year-old East Machias man died on Thursday after his car crossed into oncoming traffic and collided with a pickup truck in Ellsworth.
The crash on Bucksport Road (Route 1) was reported at about 12:30 p.m.
Based on a preliminary investigation Ellsworth police believe Thomas Gaddis, 77, of East Machias was driving east in a Hyundai Elantra when his car crossed the center line and hit a westbound Dodge Ram pickup driven by 62-year-old Burton Merchant, of Sorrento.
Gaddis was pronounced dead at the scene. Merchant was taken by ambulance to Maine Coast Memorial Hospital with minor injuries, police said.
