An inmate who died last weekend at Penobscot County Jail has been identified.

Jodi Melanson, 39, died at the facility at around 9:35 p.m. Saturday, according to the   Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office.

Melanson had been arrested and taken into police custody Saturday at around 11:50 a.m., before being taken to Penobscot County Jail. She had been charged with theft by unauthorized taking and criminal mischief, according to Bangor police spokesperson Jeremy Brock.

She was unable to pay bail and remained at the jail after officials conducted a general screening.

During a standard check of inmates in the holding area Saturday evening, Melanson was found unresponsive. Officials attempted to resuscitate her, assisted by Bangor emergency personnel.

The person did not have any injuries at the time of their death, the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office reported.

The Maine Department of Corrections and the Maine medical examiner’s office have been notified of her death. An investigation is ongoing.
