I am always grateful to Waldo County’s state Sen. Chip Curry when I see the suicide prevention fence on the Verona Island bridge. He was the face of that effort, but also the soul. He angled successfully to save the lives of troubled people but also the many, many lives of the people who would have been left behind by more suicides. The families.
That is what we ask our legislators to do: To look farther into the future than we do; to assemble facts as we cannot; to understand the variables as we are unable to and to harness the law to best address our common good. I believe Chip Curry does well.
He shows he understands how government works. He is a leader in tackling the complicated issues of creating affordable housing, protecting us from foreclosures due to high property taxes and supporting our schools as they teach both humanities and trades. Along with schools, he is a leader in looking out for kids and addressing the often difficult environments in which they are raised.
All these issues involve everyone in Augusta in order to make any progress. We all benefit.
Even more important than his legislative skills, Curry has the more subtle qualities of an effective public servant. He listens patiently to everyone and cheerfully, too! His job is first to understand what’s going on. Once there, the challenge of working with his fellow senators to make our lives better thoroughly engages him.
I believe a vote for Chip Curry is a vote for Maine. For all of us!
