What is one new policy that the state should embrace to make housing easier to build and afford?
We have to immediately address the permitting requirements that are in place for new home construction. On multi-unit buildings, the average cost is around $25,000 per unit. Those costs will always be passed along to the renter or homebuyer.
Transmission lines, solar incentives and offshore wind development have been controversial over the past several years. What steps should Maine take to meet growing demand for electricity?
We shouldn’t be picking winners and losers in the energy market. Our focus should be on providing Mainers with the most cost-effective options to keep their homes warm and well-lit. I personally think that offshore wind is a government boondoggle altogether that puts Maine’s fishing industry at risk.
Should the state make changes to its tax laws? If so, outline your priorities.
I supported the senior citizen property tax freeze in the 130th legislative session. I was sad to see the Democrats vote that policy out last year. I would support it again when it’s brought back.
We also need to evaluate our spending habits. In the past two state budgets, Democrats have used historic budget surpluses to blow out additional spending as opposed to refunding it to Maine taxpayers or discussing a reduction in the state income tax rates.
We are closing in on the one-year anniversary of the Lewiston mass shooting. Are further legislative responses required around guns, mental health, supporting victims and families or other policy areas?
The investigation into the Lewiston tragedy shows that there was a serious failure in the system which led to the loss of innocent life. We have to invest in finding solutions to these serious mental health problems. We have to keep people safe, especially from mentally unstable individuals who can become violent, while protecting the due process rights of law-abiding Mainers and preserving this state’s proud outdoor heritage.
Describe a unique attribute or area of focus that you will bring to the Legislature.
One of the best attributes I believe that I have is a common sense approach when it comes to government. As a small business owner, I know how to put petty politics aside and get work done for people.
