NEWPORT, Maine (AP)&nbsp- Motorists looking for cheap gas may want to set their sights on the central Maine town of Newport.

At a time when the average statewide price for regular was $3.98 per gallon, the Valero station was selling it this week for 30 cents less.

Greg Lovley bought the Valero station in Newport two years ago and has been offering low prices ever since. The Irving station up Route 2 has kept pace with Valero and matched this week’ s price of $3.68. Prices at other stations in the area have also remained competitive.

Lovley says he’ s not trying to hurt his competitors but just wants to help the local community. He says his goal is break even on gasoline sales, adding that the low prices have boosted sales inside his remodeled store.
