KENDUSKEAG – Robert Girvan II, 54, father, son, brother and husband, died Thursday, Aug. 21, 2008, while battling brain cancer. Bob was born Nov. 10, 1953, in Bangor, and attended school in both Maine and Naples, Fla., where he indulged his love of golf. Bob honed his golf skills on his parents’ golf course in Kenduskeag, starting at age 5, and won many tournaments, both as a junior golfer and as an adult. His proudest accomplishment on the links was the fact that he won the Bangor Daily News Paul Bunyan Tournament in three different decades. Among many others, he won the Maine Mid-Amateur twice and also twice qualified for the National Public Links Amateur Golf Tournament. He made many lifelong friendships playing golf, and appreciated the love and support of these friends so much during his illness. In addition to his golf family he had another loyal family from United Parcel Service, where he worked for 34 years. He missed them all very much when he was struck with his illness, and he was astounded by the generosity of these people who gave so much of themselves so that he could feel more secure about his family’s well being. Bob leaves behind a wife, Karen; and two beloved children, Robert Girvan III of Portland and Bailey Girvan of Kenduskeag. In addition, he is survived by his mother, Dorothy Girvan; three sisters, Margaret Berry and her husband, Edwin, Mary Call and her husband, Harold, and Barbara Rozelle and her husband, Peter; one brother, William Girvan and his wife, Lois; a special aunt, Mary Barry; many nieces, and nephews, all of whom he loved so much. He was predeceased by his father, Robert Girvan Sr.; and a sister, Janet Girvan Greene. At Bob’s direction there will be no services. Instead, Bob asked that people who wanted to do something in his memory play a round of golf and think of him a little; Kebo Valley, Bar Harbor, was always his favorite, but he could find something to love on any course! He also asked that friends consider donating to either of two charities that held a special place in his heart, American Cancer Society Relay for Life, in care of Karen Girvan, P.O. Box 273, Kenduskeag, ME 04450 or Brianna Rachel Koncinsky Fund for Children, care of Eastern Maine Medical Center Credit Union, 849 Stillwater Ave., Bangor, ME 04401.
