THORNDIKE, Maine – A Rhode Island man received a serious head injury when his ATV rolled over on Palmer Road Sunday evening.

John Sylvia, 46, of Bristol, R.I., was listed in critical condition at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor after the 5 p.m. accident. Sylvia, who was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, was removed from the scene by Unity Ambulance personnel and taken to Unity Raceway where he was met by a LifeFlight helicopter and flown to EMMC, Maine State Trooper Thomas Welch said Tuesday.

Welch said Sylvia owns property off Palmer Road and had been ATV riding with his son most of the day. He said the two had just come off a trail when Sylvia abruptly turned onto his property instead of using his driveway. The ATV went onto the lawn and flipped on top of Sylvia before coming to rest on its wheels a short distance away.

“From what we can tell he was going a little too quick for the turn he was making,” Welch said. “I’m not saying he was speeding, he just took too sharp a turn.”

Welch said that alcohol was “not suspected” as a contributing factor in the accident.
