NELLIE FLORENCE HICKMAN THOMASTON – Nellie Florence Hickman, 80, a resident of Atlantic Highway, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2008, at her residence. Mrs. Hickman was born March 23, 1928, in Thomaston, the daughter of Richard and Dorothy Judkins Lowell. She was employed in her younger years as a waitress in several establishments in Rockland. In May 1945 she married Russell Hickman, and lived in many international locations for 27 years with Russ as the wife of a coastguardsman. They ultimately made their permanent residence in Thomaston, where they have resided for the last 42 years. During that time, she worked for the town of Thomaston in several departments, including the assessor’s office as an assessor. Mrs. Hickman was an active member of Knox Pomona Grange, serving as secretary for 15 years; Grace Chapter No. 93, Order of the Eastern Star, where she had been treasurer for 15 years and past matron; and Emblem Club No. 200 as president and chaplain of the order. Her many hobbies included crocheting, knitting, counted cross-stitch, walking, reading and she was known as an impeccable homemaker. Survivors include her husband of 63 years, Russell Hick-man of Thomaston; a son, Ro-bert Russell Hickman and his wife, Anne, of North Syracuse, N.Y.; three granddaughters, Rebecca, Regina and Elizabeth, all of North Syracuse, N.Y.; and a sister-in-law, Leona Phillips of West Rockport. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 31, at Nativity Lutheran Church, 179 Old County Road, Rockland.
