PORTLAND, Maine – A 46-year-old Maine man has been indicted on a murder charge in the 1995 shooting death of a hitchhiker he had picked up.
Steven Cutting of Palmyra had already confessed the crime to a relative, who told police.
After his arrest, Cutting told a TV reporter he picked up 36-year-old William Greenwood hitchhiking on the night of April 30, 1995, and shot him later after they got into a fight as Cutting was driving Greenwood to his home in Westbrook. The shooting took place in Portland.
In Cumberland County Superior Court last month, Cutting entered no plea to the murder charge. Prosecutors asked that no bail be set.
