CARIBOU, Maine — Jury deliberations are expected to begin this afternoon in the manslaughter trial of Heather Fortin of Limestone in Caribou Superior Court.
Fortin was charged with manslaughter in connection with the death of 20-month-old Teairra Leathers, whom she was baby sitting at the time of the child’s injury.
Fortin, who was 23 at the time, was arrested on June 27, 2007. Rena Leathers left her daughter Teairra in Fortin’s care on June 18, 2007.
Teairra had only been with Fortin for about 15 minutes when Fortin called 911 and asked for an ambulance for the child. Teairra died on June 19 of severe, acute trauma to the head, according to court records.
A superior court clerk said Wednesday afternoon that closing arguments and jury instructions were expected to begin right after lunch. The trial, which began Tuesday, had been scheduled to last for a week, the clerk said.
