LINCOLN – Mildred “Bunnie” Dugans died peacefully Sept. 10, 2008, after a long illness. She was born Mildred Ethel Alvord, Jan. 2, 1929, in Springfield, Mass., daughter of Harry and Margerie (Storey) Alvord. A lifelong resident of Maine, she was previously married to the late William F. McAllister and late Robert P. Stubbs II. She married the love of her life, Elwood “Du” Dugans, in 1982 and lived with him in the Lincoln area and even after his death in 2005. She will be well remembered as a mother first, then as a nurse at Bangor State Hospital and as a private duty nurse, a caregiver for many years for foster children and babies awaiting adoption through the Good Samaritan Agency, and for businesses that she owned in the years after this. Family was always first with her and she also enjoyed gardening, fishing and camping with Du and her crafts. She is survived by her five children, William “Mike” McAllister and his wife, Debra, of Orono, Arthur “Mickey” McAllister of Clearwater, Fla., Marjorie Grindel and husband, Kevin, of Lucerne-in-Maine, Marcia Croft of Southwick, Mass., and Mary Jane Curtis and husband, Tracy, of Florida. She also leaves behind seven grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren; and two very special friends through the years, June Michaud and companion, Harold. She was predeceased by her parents; two siblings; and her husband, Elwood Du Dugans. Special thanks to her doctor of many years, Dr. Carl Alessi, the staff of Colonial Acres Nursing Home for their love and care for 16 years since her debilitating stroke, and the staff at Penobscot Valley Hospital for her final days. At her request, there will be no funeral. Gifts and donations in her memory may be made at your local humane society, animal shelter or pet rescue league.
