PORTAGE LAKE – Melvina May DeMerchant, 80, died peacefully Sept. 13, 2008, surrounded by her loving family, at her residence. She was born May 25, 1928, in Oakfield, the daughter of George and Margaret (Pratt) Richards. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother to her family. Melvina married Clayton Maurice DeMerchant, May 5, 1962. Surviving, in addition to her husband of Portage Lake, are two sons, Stephen Sanders of Denver and Gene Sanders of San Diego; four daughters, Terri Ann DeMerchant and Jessie A. Woods, both of Portage Lake, Sheila Baron of Madera, Calif., and Vickie Urquhart and her husband, Rob, of Escondido, Calif.; two brothers, Clyde Richards of Corinth and Milford Richards of Oakfield; three sisters, Saddie Carmichael of Littleton, Kathleen Jones of Portland and Lila Sargent of Tampa, Fla.; seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two grandchildren, Phillip Baron and Anthony Stockwell. Friends may call noon-1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 22, at Mockler Funeral Home, 24 Reservoir St., Caribou, where services will be held 1 p.m. with the Rev. Donald Morton Sr. officiating. Interment will take place at Northern Maine Veterans’ Cemetery, Caribou.
