LEON WILLARD HITCHCOCK – GRAY – Leon Willard Hitchcock, 82, died Sept. 21, 2008. He was born Oct. 13, 1925, in Gray, to Arthur L. and Alice Brown Hitchcock. He attended Gray schools and was a senior at Pennell Institute when he was drafted into the Navy. He left school at Christmas vacation time. He served in the Pacific aboard an LST. After the war, he returned to Gray and became employed by Maine Central Railroad. After several years, he went to work at First National Bakery and retired at 25 years. He then worked for State of Maine DOT for several years. He never married but stayed in Gray and cared for his parents until they passed away. He was a 62-year member of Gray Post No. 86 American Legion and National Rifle Association. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. Leon was predeceased by his parents; a sister, Ruth C. Emerson; and a brother, Arthur L. Hitchcock Jr. He is survived by a sister, Olive H. Lewis of Gray; eight nieces and nephews. A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Wilson Funeral Home, 24 Shaker Road, Gray, with the Rev. Nancy Salisbury officiating. A committal will be after at Gray Village Cemetery.
