FREEDOM – Pauline “Polly” S. Nickless, 79, passed away unexpectedly Thursday, Sept. 18, 2008, at Inland Hospital, Waterville. Polly was born July 16, 1929, in Freedom, the daughter of Richard and Iola (Allen) Smith. She attended school in Freedom. She married Erwin Nickless and they shared 61 years together. Polly and Erwin owned and operated a dairy farm in Unity for 35 years. They retired in 1982 and spent many wonderful times traveling on vacations together and with close friends. They wintered in Florida for 14 years and recently returned to Maine to be with their family. Polly was a very special lady who was the greatest and most wonderful wife and mother. She touched many hearts in her 79 years. She was a very precious angel. She was predeceased by a sister, Christine White. Polly is survived by her husband, Erwin of Freedom; two daughters, Linda Byram and husband, Bob, of Bangor, and Peggy Hodgkins and husband, Lloyd, of Jefferson; two grandchildren, Gary Sibley and fiancee, Jackie Doar, of Fort Kent, and Becky Quirk and husband, David, of Dedham; two great-grandchildren, Riley and Griffen Sibley; a sister, Charlene Gould and husband, George, of Albion; a brother, Richard Smith and wife, Millie, of Benton; and a brother-in-law, Donald White of Vassalboro. Visiting hours will be 4-7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, at Lawry Brothers Funeral Home, 107 Main St., Fairfield. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 21, at Freedom Congregational Church, 45 Pleasant St., Freedom, with the Rev. Bob Dorr officiating.
