ROYCE C. SMITH – BUCKSPORT – Royce C. Smith, 87, died peacefully in his sleep Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2008. He was born Feb. 18, 1921, a son of Arthur and Anna (Lowell) Smith. Royce owned and operated Smith’s Dairy, a business started by his father, delivering milk door to door, until he sold the business in 1959. He then worked as a custodian at the Bucksport Junior High School, from which he retired after 26 years of service. Always a jokester with a heart of gold, that every kid in junior high school knew he would give them change for the soda machine. Family was very important to Royce. He was a hard worker; he enjoyed working the family farm with workhorses. Royce built a new house on the family farm with wood that was harvested from the property with the help of his workhorse, King. Year after year he was very proud of his vegetable garden, he had a standing competition with his brothers to see whose garden would produce peas for July Fourth festivities. Royce was also very particular about the way his property looked and the cleanliness of his vehicles. He also loved his home state of Maine, saying after a family trip to California, that he never wanted to leave Maine again. He recited limericks and words of wisdom to live by throughout his life. Royce is survived by his loving daughters, Sandra Robshaw and her husband, Jeffrey, of Bucksport, and Jessica Moretti and her husband, Michael, of Scarborough; his beloved granddaughter, Racheal Robshaw and her boyfriend, Lucas Grindle, of Bucksport; and his great-grandson, Remington Grindle of Bucksport. He is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Regina Smith of Bucksport and Mary Smith of Portland; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers and sisters, Basil Smith, Peter Smith, Chester Smith, Harry Smith, Leona (Smith) Grindle, Mildred (Smith) Gray, Merton Smith and Maynard Smith. Family and friends will gather for visitation 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25, at Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home, 28 Elm St., Bucksport, where a funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday with Pastor Peter Remick officiating.
