WINDHAM and ROCKWOOD Abe Stern died unexpectedly at a Portland Maine hospital on Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2004, at the age 63. He was surrounded by his loving family at his time of death. Mr. Stern was born in Biddeford, Nov. 24, 1941, the son of Rose (Treshinsky) and Max Stern, now deceased. He grew up in Portland and graduated from Portland High School in 1960. While growing up, he also spent time with family members in Lawrence Mass. After high school he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving from 1961 to 1964. While in the Army, he was stationed in France and Germany and was most proud of his service in Vietnam, working with intelligence and training prior to the escalation of U.S. involvement in the war. After discharge from the service, he married his wife of 38 years, Evelyn (Theriault) in April of 1965. He began a lengthy career in the retail industry, which began with Sears, followed by Arlens, Zayer, and Ames. He worked his way through the ranks to become a store manager and finally a district manager of loss prevention until his retirement in 1992. He most enjoyed boating on Sebago Lake, camping with his family, visits to family members in the Rockwood Maine/Moosehead lake area, and his two vacations with close friends to Aruba. He cherished his time with his family and was a proud and devoted father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Evelyn (Theriault) of Windham; two sons, Daniel of Westbrook and Brian of Windham, and daughter, Lisa Bell and her husband, James, of Dayton; two granddaughters, Emily and Elizabeth Bell of Dayton; a brother, Bruce of Windham; and sister, Dorothy Grayson of Scarborough; his Uncle Abe Treshinsky of Gardiner, Mass., and Aunt Mildred “Bunny” Slosberg of Lauderhill, Fla., as well as many nieces and nephews. Visiting hours will be from 6-8 p.m. Friday at Crosby and Neal Funeral Home, 21 Oak St., Guilford. A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph’s New Cemetery in Rockwood ME. Friends who wish may make donations in the memory of Mr. Stern to the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund, One Intrepid Square, West 46th Street and 12th Avenue, New York, NY 10036, in remembrance of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.
